Homemade Hot Chocolate Recipe
It’s rich, delicate, and easy to make, with intense chocolate flavor. Garnish with marshmallows or whipped cream for a cold weather treat!
Ingredients
- Sugar - 2 Tablespoons
- Milk - 2 cups
- Bittersweet chocolate chopped - 4 oz (just under 1 cup measured)
- Whipped cream (optional)
- Splash of vanilla extract (optional)
- Marshmallows (optional)
Preparation:
Step 1:
Combine milk and sugar in a small saucepan and place on the stovetop over medium heat.
Step 2:
While the milk is heating, place the diced chocolate in the microwave oven and heat for 30 seconds. Take the chocolate out and stir it. Return to microwave oven and heat for another 30 seconds, remove and stir. Continue to heat and stir the chocolate in 30 secs intervals until it has * nearly * melted. Always on the side of undermelting, so you do not risk overheating it and causing separation and grainyness.
Step 3:
When the milk reaches the scalding point( 180 degrees F, with bubbles on the side), turn off the heat and add the melted chocolate, whisking to combine. Add the vanilla extract now, if desired. Top with marshmallows or whipped cream if using, and enjoy!
Notes
Make sure you do not over-heat the milk. You want it to just have bubbles on the sides, about 180 degrees F. You don't want the milk to boil.
*still, you may want to reduce or exclude the sugar altogether, * If you use commodity sweeter like semisweet or milk chocolate rather of the bittersweet. You can always candy to taste at the end.
